Dogs, Dust and Herding
By Heather A. Pozzi

The instinct test is a wonderful way to introduce people to herding. However, for most dogs it's the first and last time they will ever see stock. Herding takes quite a commitment and while the instinct test is a wonderful introduction to stock work, it is only a small first step. |
| The first MASCA Herd'n in the Sun test demonstrated what was already known: that correct drive and ability are not as widespread in the Aussie and mini Aussie as they could be. Even the dogs passing the test displayed varying levels of power, interest and natural ability. Of course, a few minutes on stock do not exactly define what sort of ability the dog will exhibit after a little more experience and exposure. |

My hope is that more owners and breeders will further test this trait through training, trialing and farm work. We should select each passing generation with an eye not only to type and structure, but to instinct. Working ability is one of the many facets that make this diverse breed so appealing to so many. It is such a joy to see these little Aussies work! |
| Despite the initial confusion, 27 dogs of various herding breeds participated! Enthusiasts traveled from as far away as Fresno, Palm Springs and San Jose, and , of course, many arrived from the local area. I've never had such a wonderful time eating dirt and dog hair, although by the end, I could scratch my name in the dust collected on my arm. My mother-in-law had to drag me away! |

The spectators enjoyed watching the dogs, learned a little about herding and quite a bit about the mini Aussie. There were some wonderful conversations and the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves. Word has spread far and wide about the event and I have subsequently been contacted by herding dog owners in other states inquiring when MASCA will hold a Herd'n in the Sun in their area! Plans for future instinct test and fun days are underway. |
